When the subway came to Coney Island, it went from
drawing thousands to hundreds of thousands. Bruce Bliven's article,
from a November 23, 1921 issue of The New Republic, looks at the
people and sights of the island through a different (and more critical
lense) than many of the writers of his day. By the Twenties, many
people saw Coney as a good thing and the critics had been left with the
Dreamland fire. So, Bliven's account had a bit more cynical twist
than the author's of Coney's next generation.
