Guy Wetmore Carryl, "Marvelous Coney Island"

Guy Wetmore Carryl's "Marvelous Coney Island" (September 1901)  is one of the earlier popular culture accounts we have of the island.  His inquiring eyes went all over Coney, not only looking at the parks, but also at the Bowery and other areas where reputable people might not go.  Carryl is a little unsure of some of the things the area had seen, like the camel at Luna Park.  He said, "Oh, that camel!"  Surely it was interesting for a New Yorker to come in contact with camels, elephants and many other creatures not often seen in Brooklyn.
