Coney Island Stereographs

The Stereograph appears to have been a popular item at the turn of the century. They consisted of two images, almost identical, placed next to each other. Owners used a special viewer that made the two pictures appear to be one three-dimensional image. I have no idea if it can be done with pictures on the web...but you can try if you like.

Coney Island was an obvious choice for Stereograph photographers. Here throngs of people could be found outdoors on a beach with a southern exposure that stayed lit and warm most of the day, something that helped owners of early camera. New York was the epitome of turn-of-the-century urbanism and pictures here often captured the young at their most innocent and the working class during their few hours of relaxation.

This stereograph is the only color, and the only drawing in my collection. It depicts Luna Park. To the left is the 125-foot Electric Tower. The beautiful promenade and lagoon stretches behind it.
